The Role of the Media

Should the media be reporting the news? trying to make the news, or even trying to manipulate the news towards their own personal goals and objectives, if the later is true is it really fair? does it not give those who control the media an unfair advantage over the rest of us?

Check out the following comments in an excellent letter to the editor in this weeks paper.

Even the big city and national papers have a bias. Depends who owns them. It's not new.

It's an excellent letter. I was appalled, but not really surprised at the last editorial in the Herald. I think the Herald has crossed the proverbial line several times in the last few weeks. It started with the article, complete with pictures of the four councillors who are trying to do something for this community, and reminding voters not to support them. It followed with the never ending stream of articles and editorials beating the Crowsnest Centre thing to death. The absolute worst however, was the very personal response to a letter writer in the last editorial. It is beyond belief that an editor would attack a letter writer by discussing his or her employment and implying things about their standard of living relative to others in the community. The Herald's editorial policy is one dimensional, and seems to be "agree with us or we'll cut you up in the next editorial."

There are four things that need to happen in this community.
1. A new mayor.
2. Clean the place up by enforcing the Community Standards Bylaw.
3. Bulldoze the Crowsnest Center, sell the land to a developer, and get something built that isn't an eyesore, and that contributes to the tax base.
4. The Pass Herald shuts down -- it's a devisive force, and basically a pain-in-the-butt.
