Update for January 21st
Council is scheduled to meet tonight and tomorrow regarding the 2009 municipal budget.
Administration as presented us with a package tonight that allows for a 5% tax increase but needs council to make cuts to a total of $251,461 to reach that level. Some difficult choices must be made.
Each one percent increase in taxes brings the municipality in roughly $61,000.

Seems like every time you guys get together it goes up 1%, I witnessed 4% a few weeks back, or, even better, how much can the people of the 'Pass afford... Loved that one!
Maybe next time instead of just giving the high end estimate to the RCMP for Rumrunner days, you keep the taxpayer in mind and offer the min. asked for and not throw a bonus $15000.00 at them just because it was getting late in the evening, not to mention that cash wasting vote on the center... Shame shame.
"$61000.00 = a councilor and a 3rd in wages". Justify to your public.

I agree with some of what you say the fact that taxpayers are reaching their limit I agree with.
The money for the RCMP for the Rum runner days was scaled back because they confirmed the costs for us. (We upped the number to be in line with past years costs, until they confirmed a lower price)
The vote on the centre keep in mind that council did not ask for that vote. That was forced on us by the petition. So would I have wasted that money not at all. But those are probably the same folks that are running the new petition that claims we should maintain all services, keep taxes down and save money. (Their next act will be walking on water)

Does the Crowsnest Center that is supposedly now self sufficient pay property and business taxes??
No and No.
How long do you think before council gets approached with. "Due to the economic situation both in the province and locally caused by the downturn in the minning industry the Centre will require assistance from the municipality"
The centre is being ran has a business it should be playing on a level playing field with all other businesses in the hotel, restaurant, catering business.

Pretty sweet deal...if something breaks the landlord fixes it?
The tax base would increase significantly if the land was sold and taxes were paid!
