Interesting article the province is going to collect an extra $120 million from education taxes this year.
This means the pressure on council is going to be even greater than last year to sharpen their pencils and keep the municipal portion of the tax bill under control.
Good luck

Redford is not making a big deal about this part of her budget. Here in Edmonton they are telling us it could increase our taxes 3-5%over all.
Sure hope the magnificent seven do not give us the same ZERO percent tax increase we got last year.

What is really upsetting is that every year the number of kids enrolled in our schools goes down.
But the dollars we contribute to education goes up.
In reality we are subsidizing the area's where the numbers are growing.
I wonder what Counciller Gallant is going to suggest to keep our tax increase at "Zero"? Maybe he will suggest the Town hire another employee to become more "efficient".
Councilor Gallant will vote yes to all the hiring and then at tax time he will no because he knows the budget will pass and that way he can keep his election promise(lie). He also voted yes for an increase in municapal bills and the franchise fee increase. But his promise was to not vote to raise property taxes.Honourable???
It is becoming obvious Gallants concern about our communities high taxes ended after the election. He thought our utilities were too cheap so he took a couple of hundred thousand buck from us though our Gas & Power bills and I forget how much he increased the water and sewer charges. He votes to spend spend spend and hire hire hire then come budget time keeps his election promise and votes against the tax increase. I guess he is keeping his election promise (in his mind).
I voted for Gallant because of his commitment on spending & taxes. We are finding out what Brian Gallant is about. Honorable...I think not.

"the high property taxes...it hurts our families, it drives away business, and it discourages investment in our town" Brian Gallant election 2010. I have never heard him talk about our high tax problem since the election. It is budget time and we have put the reins in hands so now is the time he can show us what he made of. Last budget he took the easy path, went along with all the spending then pretended to keep his promise and voted against the budget. This is a new year, lets hope he finds his roots (concern about high taxes) and brings his high tax concerns to the table.
Dean, I heard yesterday council is considering increasing the business tax 20% to help pay for all the spending. This council does not understand how hard it is to make a go of it on Main Street. Every since Wall Mart came to Pincher it has become almost impossible and now with Fields closing it will take away even more traffic. I hope this is not true and just rumor.
No, Fields is closing at the end of March. But that is Canada wide - they are all closing due to the Target Issue, as HBC owns Zellers and the discount store Fields. So, not really related to any issues here.
Another business closing, jobs lost, less walk in traffic and this doesn't 'relate' to the fiscal disaster being conjured up by the present council? The arrogance of the comment is astounding, perhaps written by a council member trying to justify his job.
So, Fields closing and Extra Foods being downgraded is not a local issue? Decisions made far away have a way of becoming a local issue for elected local officials the world over. The question is what will our mayor decide to do about it.
Yes, Field's closing is unfortunate but nothing could be done - as mentioned CANADA WIDE.
The council just needs to get on board with trying to attract new business. And maybe advertise on the highway the ones that are here. There is more here than Tim Hortons and KFC.
I sure hope the council action plan is not a tax increase. I do agree with Councilor Gallants election comment the high taxes here are crippling every aspect of this community and contributing to our decline.
What is the scoop on Extra Foods being downgraded? Another sad CNP story. Thanks..
Seems to be people around here just like to complain about everything - I think sad stories perk them up unfortunately.

Friend, wake up and get engaged to what is being said. I do not think this blog is meant to be “happy stories” vs “sad stories”. You seem to be having trouble figuring things out so let me help you a little bit. This is a discussion about the council’s decisions and direction they are taking this community. Many of us are very concerned. If you are looking for “happy” why not start your own blog, push your head a little deeper in the sand and post all the “happy” you want.
Thank you Dean for caring about our community and investing your time contributing to an informed thoughtful debate.
Maybe we could have trees full of sugar plums and fairies dancing in our streets.
Untrue Rumor, Extra Foods is being taken over by Save On Foods. I think that will be good. Spruce up the place and have some new things going on.
No it is not Save on Foods, it is just another brand of Westfair Foods which also owns Extra Foods. You are just being sold a different brand.
Anom 11:58 is correct. It is a change of name and Branding within the same company. Extra Foods has been having a hard time since Wall Mart opened. I hear this is their last attempt to make a go of it at this store. If this does not work we will have another empty building on Main Street…maybe think about saving some gas money and shop local. Less gas, less vehicle expense, less carbon foot print and more locals employed, win win win win. Worth consideration.
I do not see the Fields store on Mr Gallants list?
