Clean up in the Crowsnest Pass-Service Plus

Service Plus Program Dates Announced

The Service Plus Program is a new initiative designed to allow residents to bring large items for disposal to locations throughout the community.  This program is a cost-effective solution that will allow residents to conduct “Spring Clean Ups” without incurring the costs and travel needed to take items to the landfill.  There will be a bin for metal and a bin for regular waste at the sites listed below.  Please bring electronics and paint to the Recycling Roundup at the Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman on Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 9:00 – 2:00 pm.   For more information please contact the Operations Department at (403) 563-2220.

Several things to keep in mind we used to have a spring clean up that was highly in efficient and very expensive (Between $150,000 and $400,000 a year). This is an attempt on council's part to bring back a service on a trail basis to see if it can be done in a cost effective and efficient manner.  If this is successful it will be hopefully expanded next year, now for this year it is just in the three locations because they are one's where the bins can be supervised while they are open. There is nothing that says next year we can't look at other locations if we can find a way to secure them.

Is there a reason that Bellevue and Frank are left out of the mix? Just wondering.

Administration recommended that we do it at these places because they are easily secured.
(This is my position) moving forward if this first one is successful I would like to see us expand it next year and do it in the fall as well.

For now this is a good start I will put my junk in my truck and just drive a little further across the highway to the Hillcrest yard. Next year hopefully it will be in Bellevue to.

I like the idea behind this but I also think it will be a disaster. I can see those bins being full within a few hours of opening and then what happens? Will people just take there stuff to the dump or back home or to the bush. Maybe they will wait until after hours and then dump it outside of the bin area.
Lately I have been a little upset with you Dean for not answering my questions and for censoring(not posting it) one of my more than fair comments. You preached about transparency before you were elected and now you and the rest of council are turning into the same as the previous council.

The bins once they are filled will be hauled out to the landfill and dumped. Hopefully the bins are filled lots.

This is a positive step. Keep up the good work.

This is a great compromise and a clear indication that council is focusing on the solution and not the problem. The goal is to get this place cleaned up; judging by our streets during spring/fall clean up in the past, the tax payers are willing. Making it easy for the taxpayers to do that , as opposed to fining them for not, is a much better way of reaching the goal.
Good job council!
