Waiving of Fees for groups in the Crowsnest Pass
I have now received a comment on my blog and a couple of emails, regarding the potential waiving of ice fees for the proposed Pee Wee provincial tournament in late March.
The question being asked is how do other groups go about this?
There is a policy in place regarding this issue, for the Rec and Culture board to recommend waiving of fees.
This group went straight to council, with the reason given to council that they were working with tight time frames.
So what should other groups do?
Two choices apply to the culture and rec board go in front of them explain your reasons for your request, whether it be financial hardship, special event, etc.
Or send a letter to the CAO requesting that you go straight in front of council and let them address it, put together a bit of a presentation, always wise to suggest during your presentation that you will be bringing people into town, putting the community on the map, and giving something back.
For example Minor Hockey is going to make a contribution to the netting at the Complex.
Don't be afraid to lobby a couple of councilors prior to your presentation it helps, call the municipal office they will give you the councilors phone numbers.
The likely hood of success? I do not know it worked for this group give it a try, there are a lot of groups in our community that are struggling financially I'm sure would be glad for the assistance

Politicians endorsing private ventures.
At council we are debating the merits of putting in place a policy that Mayor or councillors should have council approval before they endorse a private venture.
Where this began is the Mayor participation in the Bridgecreek video below.
Some people will argue that just appearing in the video as the Mayor of the Crowsnest Pass is an endorsement unto its self.
Take a look at the video, if you do not want to watch it all the Mayor appears just over five minutes in.
Then take a moment on the right and vote, on whether you feel this is something a politician should or should not be doing.

Commotion about promotion in the Crowsnest Pass.
Commotion about promotion, on Tuesday September 21 I raised the issue of elected representatives participating in promoting private ventures.
The following is what I presented to council:
To eliminate the possibility, perceived or real of members of municipal council, being seen as endorsing a private corporation, development, public offering, raising of funds for a private project, or any other non-governmental process.
Motion
"Henceforth no member of council shall be permitted to endorse any project, appear in any promotional video, pamphlet, or publication of any type, or attend shareholders meetings, without first presenting to council the reasons for such involvement and receiving its approval".
This motion in no way intends to limit a councilor’s ability to do the following:
Volunteer at a function, or an event put on by a private group.
Attend a shareholders meeting as a private citizen, or investor.
Appear in various types of marketing, or promotional material that promotes the community itself.
I believe politicians cross a line when they are seen or even perceived to be seen as promoting a private enterprise. Promote the community absolutely but not a business. This may come back to bite us in the rear end. Council directed administration to bring back a policy for this issue to our next council meeting.
Where this came from is the Mayor's appearance in the bridgegate video.
