Mayor's Update on the Hotel another study

After deadlines being extended twice already for a development permit and engineering plans, plus an additional extension on the naming of the hotel. Tomorrow is the deadline does anyone anticipate that there will be announcement within the next 36 hours? will there be another extension?. Or are we being led down the garden path once again (Quebec Manufacturer).
The Mayor has tossed around many dates and time frames on this issue and numerous others I was just reminded yesterday about the Rivers Run properties by the end of March. That is the problem when you build up people's expectations you should never be upset if they get frustrated when you don't deliver.

On the right hand side is a poll on this issue feel free to vote I am trying a different type of poll has the google one's were not working very well.

Update: The Mayor on his moment with Randy this morning mentioned that Best Western are conducting their own mini-feasibility study that will be done by June 17. Strange months back the Mayor was gloating about how fast this process was proceeding due to the fact that the Municipality had hired a consultant to put together a feasibility study included with the original tender package.
Obviously based on the comments from the Mayor this morning there appears to be a need to re address those original numbers. Or this could just be a stalling tactic because Medican does not have an investor yet.

Note: Seldom I do this but I am going to high light a comment that was made last night, somebody obviously did their home work.

Maybe Best Western noticed that the study included in the RFP is bogus.

It says we have heli-skiing, whitewater rafting, windsurfing, heli-touring and paragliding.

It mentions the Bingay coal project (suspended), Devon ("due to the age of its plant,it is in need of regular upgrading. In the future, this in turn should require the periodic services of out of town contracters ..."), pipeline, drilling and forestry companies.

And "Rum Runner days and Thunder in the Valley .. attract several thousands of tourists".

It says we have "Highway 3, the weather accessible ... highway" but then it says "Having hotels in close proximity ... is favourable ... because of poor road conditions which often result in the Crowsnest Pass during the winter season."

Dean,
According to the latest Mayor’s Corner, you're a ‘wannabe’ and I'm a ‘has-been’, while the Pass Herald in their editorial of this week wants us all to ignore the many past and on-going transgressions of this currently sitting mayor and council and instead think 'positive thoughts'. “Don’t worry, be Happy”. Backers of the mayor who write letters to the editor who I have it on good authority from a source who should know are all old people (which explains a lot in itself) who also want us to bury our collective heads in the sand, ignore the facts, and pretend the solution to our community’s problems lies in sticking with what doesn't work? According to them, residents here are too disconcerting. Instead, we should "Try getting behind the plow instead of doing everything in your power to kill the horse".

It amazes me that whenever we get close to an election this same drivel from these same kinds of people starts floating to the surface encouraging residents here to stick with the same old same old without any rhyme or reason, other than because “we told you to”.

Why does a certain PR firm not advise that "Before the snow flies" sounds much more realistic.

If nothing does develop we can still open a truck stop/driving school.

Old people (which explains a lot in itself). Isn't that you. My God.

And you wonder why you lose the votes of people.

I am shocked to think that you believe the Mayor was referring to me.
I am sure that the Mayor and council have an opinion of me just as we all have an opinion of them. That's Ok the chances of us all agreeing with each other are pretty slim.
In less than five months they will have the opportunity to put their record, their positions on issues to the public then the public will judge.
The Herald's editorial by now most of us know that they will write what they want to write neither me or you will control that.
We all should not lose site of the fact that we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, it's by choice that I have been here for 30 years I have had many opportunities to go else where.
The letters to the editor I am struggling to figure out why those folks were not speaking up five years ago in support of their previous council and their families, opposing the hard time that those individuals received. (Maybe they just didn't know).
I expect in the next five months you are going to be able to fill many books with all the drivel, bs, promises, every shifting deadlines, stories of impending prosperity etc that will be presented to the public.
But the public will have choices (I hope decent people step forth on nomination day)then they can choice to stay on the present path or they can go in a different direction.
I just want to state very clearly right now if the public chooses to stay on the present path, don't be whining to me a year down the road.

Do not lose sight of the fact that a lot of "old" people signed that petition and can not wait for October.

You call someone in their fifties old, so what does that make you, a dinasaur,

Crowsnest Center Medican proposal is no different from the River Run proposal. If memory serves, River Run had Radisson Hotel in the bag, while the current proposal has a Best Western or Holiday Inn in the bag. Both had full municipal backing and both lacked funding. No difference.

I would completely agree with you except this present council due to their own arrogance. Have spent the last three years telling us how great they are and how much better they are than any other council.
So yes I expect more.

John, it may have been better to make reference to "oldtimers" who remember the Mayor's family, rather than to old people. I know what you meant BUT your detractors are waiting in the wind to jump on any mis-steps. Still, I know a few oldtimers who think that the Mayor and group are doing great. Can't wait until October.

Dean, I’m surprised you are “shocked” by what I said regarding you being a “wannabe” considering you do want-to-be on council again? Or, maybe, Decoux was referring to you as the has-been. :-0

Regarding, “old people”. What was meant in using that term is the only people writing letters to the editor in support of this mayor are “seniors”. That’s it! That is his demographic base… if you even want to call it that. One 79 year old gentleman here has already stated he begs to differ.

To the one talking about my losing votes. fyi, I don’t write on social media with the purpose of playing it safe (like some do), hoping to score points without taking too many unnecessary chances, but in order to express myself fully, openly and honestly, and readers can take it or leave it… I really don’t give a damn. Also, unlike Dean, I ain't running for anything… yet. So don’t even go there.

Finally, everyone seems to have missed the main point I was trying to make. Read my comment over again why don’t ya. I’ll give you a hint. Every election we seem to get into a class thing of Us against THEM. With US being the elite, establishment types, cultured and pure, and THEM being those who are not US, from the other side of the tracks. That’s how the organized US were able to get the THEM to ‘vote for a name not knowing the man’ in the last election. Are we going to have more déjà vu? Decoux and present council along with the Pass Herald it seems with the odd sprinkling of seniors and establishment types hope so. Let’s change the channel (positivism) and deceive you once again with our so-called respectability, social standing and position in society all the while being “masters at pissing on our leg, and then while smiling, tell us "it must be raining!". After the election the truth is revealed that those you were told to revile before the election had in fact your best interests at heart, while those sheep in wolfs clothing you put into office, now don’t.

The question is are people here going to let them get away with it again by pulling the wool over their eyes as they have so successfully done in the past?

Watch out for sheep in wolfs clothing and that you don’t become a sheep yourself, is what I’m saying.

John, three old people like this council, three young people like this council, and three people of undetermined age like this council. They meet inside the Coleman phone booth every other Thursday at 7:15pm. with Ms. Shitz usually presiding. She is currently on holidays in Europe.

I agree with you I guess I do wannabe on the next council. Almost every day somebody asks me that question and my answer as always been yes. Why beat around the bush people, step forward soon and indicate if you are running or not.
My hopes are one that some decent people step forward and put there names out there. Has you have said yourself people should not be waiting until the last minute.
Also I agree I hope people don't just vote for a name and get fooled again.

Okay, enough of this crap!!

When I read about "wannabe" this & "has-been" that, blah, blah blah etc, I think Emperor Decoux had it right in the Mayors Corner. "Like other species on this planet they often resort to “eating their own” that is, their political colleagues. Most will resort to self-aggrandizement speaking at great length at any opportunity to confirm their concern and prowess regarding community affairs as well as their grasp of municipal governance".

Regardless if we are "has-beens, want to be’s, regressives (back to the good old days) and progressives" or "CAVEr's", we have to remember most of us are probably on the Mayor's Watch List & as such really nothing in his or the councils eyes.

We have to remember the enemy is the mayor, CAO & councilors, NOT each other. Our mission is to bring about a decent, fair & honorable government for our community, not eat our own!

I've said it before & I'll say it again, this community has a tendency to start off really well dealing with a problem but the degenerates into bickering & fighting, bringing up the old feuds.

Maybe, just maybe, the big change this community needs for the future is to finally put aside all the old crap from the past, let bygones be bygones & work together to salvage this community.

I keep hearing and reading that this administration is doing such wonderfull things. What really puzzles me, is that when you ask them to tell you what these wonderfull things are, no one can exactly come up with anything. I really would like these dream on people, to let the rest of us know all these wonderfull things. Please make a list and post it here. Maybe when you have to strain your pea brain to think, you will realize that there is nothing positive to post as to what this administration has done. Oh, and promises don't count.

Government jobs at any level were they not once regarded as the most stable jobs a person could ask for. I see on the municipal web site under employment they are looking for an Electrician now. Is this another disgruntled employee that just can't put up with working in the land of policies and procedures?

Probably the 29th employee to leave in the last 3 years.
All's well.

John Prince said...

Rereading my comments and Dean's, for the life of me, I cannot see how Anon @8:59, Doomsayer, etc. believe we are "fighting among themselves". That is the furthest thing from the truth. In fact, we are of like-mind and spirit when it comes to municipal politics.

To borrow Doomsayers quote:

"Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can?"

With the above quote in mind, imagine if you will, a duo combination of Dean and I on council. Something to think about, hey? ;-)

If we had a leader that could get the community to buy into an idea or an action then we could be on our way. But what is the idea or action? Is it a Rec centre, community clean up and pride. What idea would bring 80-90% of the people together in a common cause. I can not stand this council and I will not vote for any of them, but who will I vote for? Who can lead us? And what is there idea or action that will get us going? How will you accomplish you idea?
Out and about everyone is complaining about what we have, but nobody is providing solutions to get to where we need to be!

This is the most hypocrytical document to date and I urge voters to use extreme caution when deciding on their vote because most politicians will tell you what to hear and then do the exact opposite, whether they be old, young or otherwise.

Bruce and the six dwarfs are now sitting in the same chairs as those who came before them. They should not have behaved as if the people who came before them did not know what they were doing. I can't wait to hear the candidate's platforms.

The first thing the new council will have to do is to restore the spirit of volunteerism which has been badly undermined by the present council. The rest will take care of itself.

So a new bylaw enforcing volunteerism will take care of everything.

I do not think anybody believes that everything will go back to where it was. There will always be a need for change, where this council fell down is one their arrogance (nobody else has done anything and we have achieved everything)
Two their communications (in their minds they have done lots but they tell us instead of talking to us, then their largest shortfall in communicating, they do not listen).
60 per cent of the voters signed a petition even if Edmonton decides it means nothing, even if some of those people had no clue what they were signing, it should have made responsible people stand up and say we have a problem here.
Summary of my post if the next council does nothing but listen and put away the arrogance we will be miles ahead of where we are today.

Larry

Anonymous said...

I agree Larry, there will always be a need for change, and you are right in stating, that if all the next council does is listen, we will be miles ahead of where we are today. The last three years has been nothing but a bunch of changes, shoved at us, in the name of change only. I, for one, could have done without most of those changes. I don't think we have made any great strides, and I certainly don't feel like this is a better place to live as a result of those "changes." So, what was the point of them??? My taxes are higher, my house is worth less, I have more rules to learn, less freedom, and from what I can see, things aren't exactly booming, and the people who live here are even more divided than the last council. The eggs and abusive language, (haven't witnessed it, just been told about it) must be some indication to the mayor and council that THEY are doing something wrong. Doesn't that make sense??

Anonymous said...

After much delay they produced a "communication" on the Fire restructuring, claiming savings from closing Hillcrest and the bogus "savings" from not buying expensive equipment. They did not tell us the increased cost of salaries and pickups.

Does anyone think this was an honest oversight due to poor communication skills?

Anonymous said...

Volunteerism is only one of many items. It is indeed important, but so are many other things.

Anonymous said...

STILL DO NOT SEE A LIST OF ALL THE WONDERFUL THINGS THIS MARE AND COUNCIL DID. Come on you defenders of Brucy and gang, let us know what we are missing here.

Wait unti you see those new entry signs they will drawn the tourists in of the highway.
Remember last year when they projected over 20000 people for Rum Runner Days the crowd will be double this year. I hope they bring another great band for Saturday night on the ISS field had a blast last year dancing away all night long.
My kids are looking forward to the carnival and all the vendors selling cool stuff along Main Street again.
For my relatives coming from out of town can they camp along the train tracks again?

Can your relatives camp along the train tracks. I certainly hope not. It was wonderful last year not having trailers all along there. Also minus the rowdies.

Yep, Rum Runner was great success without all the crowds. Meanwhile Bruce is joining the crowds in Vancouver. Expensive hotel and restaurants, etc. Vancouver attracts crowds. This kind of waste is silly when they voted to remove $100,000 from the seniors reserves.

A first class vacation for Brucy paid for by the hicks. He sure knows how to spend our money wisely, don't you all just love it.

Anonymous said...

Anon 09:38am. Please realize that this is not considered waste by the Elites, which the mayor become. There is an entitlement attitude that prevails, and Bruce is doing Gods work. Besides this is his Swan Song meeting, which he thinks he has earned.

As for the money spent, it was approved, is from another "pot" and to them is essential to see what others are doing as they move into the 21st Century. They are disconnected.

Bruce is in his element as soon they said another "study" is needed.

Well we have certainly done our share to stimulate the economy. I would say almost every consultant in the province must have either worked directly or indirectly for the Municipality.

Dean you nailed it on the head.

There is no Investor yet anybody with a hotel and $60,000 can get the Best Western tag. Just check their web site all you have to do is meet their standards and be in a territory that does not have a Best Western yet.

The real question is can Bruce drag this hotel and demolition out past October???

Anonymous said...

Bruce is now slowly learning how the world works outside of the government's payroll. He doing it in the comfort of the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver paid for by the CNP seniors housing reserve.

Anonymous said...

Would be good to know how much was spent on lawyers crafting the Medican Contract. With so many revisions, it would have been very expensive. This is really not as funny as it looks, the bill comes directly to us.

Anonymous said...

No annoucment of an extension for the Medican conditions, no annoucment of condition removal. If it was done deal, we would have wine and cheese. No wine and cheese.

This is Bruce's first encounter with the real economy and he is failing Development 101, the required course. The needless legal bills will prove the point.
Hopefully he is learning the people who were on council before him were not all stupid. This was his show and he can't blame anyone, but he will try.
