Hotel Update! this is not another Quebec Manufacturer tale??

Here is the latest update on the hotel development if these are "typical development path requirements" why put unrealistic time lines in the contract? and now I see we have a new partner in this dance the Penrose Group of Companies.

This company is just representing Medican.

Everything about this deal is a joke and I find it highly unlikely that we will have a hotel on that site in the next few years. I also think that the demolition of the CC will not be started prior to the next election. I hope I am wrong.

Penrose has some of the same people, the same address and phone # as Medican. Take care.

"We apologise for not being able to appear before Council ... on such short notice."

Implies they were invited. What is the procedure for that - is a motion needed?

This looks like another consulting company still in search of an investor. If this is Bruce's best play, he may as well continue to dance. Wonder if the other councillors are as comfortable with this as Bruce and Myron.

Didn't have enough time to give a proper notice? The consultants should have hired consultants to keep track of time.

Now, that's the kind of information I like to see. Thanks.

So consultants, developers, CAO's, can appear and speak to council but not lawyers?

So does anybody want to wager that the demo does not start until say late August/September.
This is the magnificent seven's last chance to make one of their dreams real.
In your title you talk about the Quebec manufacturer, don't forget the Ranchlands fiasco.

It would be good to know how much we have spent in legal and other consulting fees up to date. If this fiasco continues to unfold in slow motion the $200, 000 from this sale will not cover the legal fees. Or worse yet, the consultant will fail to find an investor and walks away and we are stuck with the legal fees anyway. What is the going rate for 70 revisions by a top notch Edmonton legal firm?

Anonymous said...

Dean your poll should have asked do you think this will happen in the next ten years. Maybe they can use all the money they get from the sale of Fire Equip to pay for the legal fees.

This is Bruce's and Myron's crush course in development. They should not thought so poorly of the previous council since they are not doing any better. Arrogance only goes so far, for the rest they need money.

Last lawyer I talked to charges $200.00 an hour plus photocopies phone calls transcrips etc. That is cheap compared to some. You can kiss that $200,000.00 goodbye, the lawers have it now.

Maybe $600/h? Bruce insists on the best.

Well, he NEEDS the best now doesn't he! When you carry on like that, my goodness, you can't use a shovel when you need and excavator to bury it all!

Do you think Bruce would invite Penrose to give a full update at an open-to-the-public Council meeting?

I can believe he invited them to a "meeting with Council" (the secret backroom kind). And that Penrose misunderstood and assumed he meant a legitimate Council meeting.

I'll ask Bruce about that next time I see him.
:^)

Would it be impolite to ask how you got your hands on that letter?

The appearance is that Medican, Group vachon, Penrose or which ever group is representing the developers at this site have an open opportunity to appear in front of council at their convenience. While developers that have been here for twenty years, people that volunteered for thirty years and their legal representatives will only be allowed to appear in front of council at council's convenience. (Maybe I am seeing it the wrong way)
As far as where did I get the letter from? we all have our sources???????

Yes it's easy to wallow in the best of everything if someone else is footing the bills. He has been well educated in wallowing in the best , as he's been feeding of the taxpayers trough all his grown up life.

The gate keeping to get in front of the council is ludicrous for a community of our size. Too many gate keepers at the front office and not enough people in the field. Seems a deputy fire chief should be able to operate a motor grader, since our former Fire Chief was able to fix one.

Dean, I am very grateful for your very resourceful sources. Thank 'em for me.

Dean, the fact remains that whatever group the Mayor made an agreement with needs to find an investor with 10-12 million buckeroos to build a hotel in the Pass. What savvy developer is going to get involved with a 'builder' that is still under the supervision of a court appointed Monitor to fulfill its past obligations to former suppliers? 70 some revisions to a contract by a reputable law firm at $5-$600.00 an hour all to support the ego driven dream of a Mayor and CAO who don't give a rat's ass what the taxpayers want or need. It is easy to bitch when one is 'Anonymous' on the blogs. Why the hell you aren't in the street demanding this Mayor and council cease immediately is beyond me.I am beginnning to understand how easy it was for Bradley & Becker to suck the Pass into their scam. Take care.

What did Forest Gump say? Stupid is, stupid does. Two and a half years of policy development leaves six months for economic development.
After all the heavy lifting was all done, now they are at a loss as to what to do. They have finally hired an EDO, and now it is all up to her. Who are they are going to blame next?

Chloe, worry about Ontario where you are from. It is in far worse condition than any place in Alberta.

That's what we get for voting in a Policy Wonk. He didn't know any diff and managing a budget that is "a given" is not managing a "corporation". Totally different landscape and one reverts to what one knows. Who is really driving the bus even though we claim its the Mayor? The other Administration heads are protecting their cushy jobs and compensation; where else do you get paid this much for managing so little? They have circled the wagons and its CYA all the way. We the people are but puppets to be played and the cash cow needed to feed the Beast.

I voted for Bruce thinking he understands the budget process. Unfortunately, he understands only the expenditure side of the process. Disappointed voter.

From the comments above I hope people remember the key point here is not naming the hotel, Sparwood was accepted has a Best Western over two years ago, I was in Sparwood last weekend they have not even started the foundation yet. The key issue is the investor(s) producing the $8-12 million to build the place (If you do your research for a modest hotel you are looking at $150,000 per room do the math 50-75 rooms).
The only thing going on right now is the race to start the demolition prior to the election.

When administration is conducting negotiations with a company, it is improper (illegal?) for individual councillors (including mayors) to intervene.

A council could intervene by passing a resolution inviting the company to appear before council. I don't know the legality of that.

But if there was no such resolution, who is intervening by sending this invitation? The Mayor and/or some Councillors acting outside of Council meetings?

I have mentioned this to rf.

MGA 180(1) "A council may act only by resolution or bylaw."
