Municipality of Crowsnest Pass Spending our money again!

First of all this morning the Mayor on his weekly "chat with Randy show" talks about a third new hotel coming to the Pass. On the 6 acre property across from the high school that was only listed For Sale three weeks ago, that has not even sold yet. You would think that he would wrap up the hotel on the piece of land that's been available for three years before he moves on to another venture.
Maybe the fact that the land is being rezoned by council has got him prematurely excited. It's a huge leap forward from zoning to a new hotel I thought we would have learnt that lesson by now.

Next from the Municipal web site http://www.crowsnestpass.com/finance-a-administration/employment I see we are now advertising for another addition to our bureaucratic team. Yes another one, a  Human Resources Administrator Permanent Part time.
Their is no question I think anybody outside of the glass bubble called council chambers recognizes that we have a tremendous issue with morale among the work force. Probably more outstanding grievances than there as ever been in the history of the municipality. Don't believe me talk to the employees.
But the big question on my mind is our are we going to pay for all of these people to run this bureaucratic monster? It's not sustainable in the long term.
Unless of course we are already funding them with the additional revenues from all these new hotels and coal mines.

Note: Check out Joni McFarlane's latest update on the Crowsnest Centre site:

Costs released for proposed hotel

Unbelievably the taxpayers paid for the snacks at the open house.

I think the Mayor is quoted somewhere that his entire administrative team is now in palace. What happened with that idea? After the initial notion of a “Dream Team,” we have had a nonstop marathon of bureaucratic team building. Getting a hotel built seems to be much harder. Nonetheless, $50,000 of taxpayers’ dollars, plus legal fees, can make it look like you are doing something.

From the press release:
"Medican and Group|Vachon are planning to have a Community Open House on February 12th ..."

LINDSAY GOSS Pass Herald Reporter:
"An open house hosted by Medican General Contractors"

But it turns out we are picking up the tab.

Only $100. for a catered wine and horderves event for the elite? Who do they think they are kidding? The only thing I believe is these clowns paid for it with our money and then did not invite us. Cheers!

The following link talks about the folly of opening a new hotel in a market like Crowsnest Pass and it does not cost $10,000 to read.

Maybe they will fund this out of the MSI grants

They are not paying attention to all the tax dollars which are being wasted. All the consulting fees which were paid out to date are a staggering number for a small town. $10,000 on feasibility studies, $8,000 on lawyers to review and draft a contract with Medican which had a very slight chance of going forward, another $50,000 to a consultant to retain a hotel franchise application in place – This is absolutely not how a small community should spend its tax dollars. Hotel developers can and usually work with their own consultants and conduct their own feasibility studies. Councillors are being snowed and are not doing their job.

It sure looks like our council has been presented with only one side of the story before making all of their major decisions. This is a direct result of the two person agenda committee they have allowed to develop. This system allowed only one person to control of who appeared in front of the council. This is one of the major reasons for the many poor decissions made right from day one.

About the new job posting ...

Anyone looking for a job in a municipality in Alberta should realize that there are elections coming up real soon, and with that thepossibility of a change of direction in the admin realm. If I already had a job that I could tolerate for a few more months, I might be clever to postpone my job search until November.

I think that anyone who applies for this position (or Headrick's) at this time is desperate. Does our CAO want to select a new employee from among this pool, or should he wait until after the election when our direction may be reaffirmed?

I remember how annoyed the Magnificent Seven were with the selection of a CAO (Tully Clifford) in the dying days of the previous council.

What are they thinking? Or better ... are they thinking at all? On the other hand, maybe they have already pre-selected the hire and the posting process is simply a formality.

All the secrecy and stupidity astounds me.

"Councillors are being snowed and are not doing their job."

You hit the nail right on the head with that one!

Off the topic for the last year we have not had a member of council show up at the Chamber luncheon. Suddenly the last two luncheon's mini-Bruce showed up. Is this part of what big-Bruce calls the silly season?

Really off topic, but I'm curious. While driving by the green space beside the tracks on 19th in Blairmore, I spy a couple of guys, sporting a fairly sophisticated looking rifle, a tripod between them, pointing it in the direction of downtown. ????????.....Another "only in the Crowsnest Pass" moment for me!

Mini-me cuts a good character. We should give him credit for showing up, even if it is just before election. He looked good there, Bruce should be proud of his protege.

I don't think the position has anything to do with the election. The job is reporting to CAO. He probably isn't going anywhere.
The only bad thing about the job would be working in such a crowded place!
